Australia’s National Party (The Nationals) has put forward a bill to relax Australia’s rules on nicotine e-cigarettes, offering them as a tool to help adults quit smoking, while tightening rules on young people’s use of highly addictive products.

It is reported that the bill was jointly proposed by National Party MPs George Christensen and Matt Canavan, which mainly targets the current ban and restrictions on nicotine e-cigarettes in Australia. They believe that e-cigarettes are an effective way to quit smoking and reduce smokers’ dependence on traditional cigarettes, thereby reducing the risk of cancer and other diseases.

Christensen said that he himself is an example of successfully quitting cigarettes through the use of e-cigarettes. “I think this is a very important public health issue. We should give adults the right to choose to use e-cigarettes to improve their health and quality of life,” he said.

Canavan pointed out that the current regulations on e-cigarettes in Australia are too strict, resulting in the inability of many people who want to quit smoking to obtain legal and safe products. “We should let the market compete freely and give consumers more choices. We should not let the government interfere with individual decisions,” he said.

However, the motion has also encountered some opposition, mainly from the medical profession and anti-smoking groups. They argue that e-cigarettes are not a harmless alternative, but a harmful inducement that may attract more young people to try smoking and increase their addiction to nicotine. They also worry that vaping could undercut Australia’s current gains in curbing smoking.

According to statistics, there are currently about 2.5 million smokers in Australia, of whom about 400,000 use e-cigarettes. The Australian government has formulated a series of measures to restrict the sales and use of e-cigarettes, including imposing high taxes, prohibiting their use in public places, and prohibiting their sale to minors.

The bill is still under discussion and deliberation in Congress and has not yet been voted on. The National Party said they hoped to secure the support of other parties, including the Liberals and Labor, to pass the bill.
